PMI 5 stages of a team development vs 5 Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni

After leading teams for more than 7 years I’ve heard a lot about team success. Well, successful teams don’t just happen, there’s no magic around successful teams, they evolve through structured development and overcoming dysfunctions.
A couple years ago I read the Five Dysfunctions of a Team from Patrick Lencioni which presents the common barriers to team absence of trust, fear, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability and offers strategies to overcome them. Now I’m into the PMI based on The Tuckman Ladder which highlights five stages of a team development and seems quite identical, let’s explore how there frameworks align and complement each other:

1. Forming vs. Absence of Trust

  • PMI’s Perspective (Forming): The team is coming together, members are hesitant, trust if yet to be established. Typically at this stage, individuals are focused on understanding their roles and project’s goals.
  • Lencioni’s Perspective (Absence of Trust):The lack of trust and openness discourage trust among team members. This dysfunction prevents important collaboration.
